Guan Shanyue (1912-2000), the eminent painter of the genre of the South of Five Ridges, was honored as the best contemporary painter of plum blossom. In 1992, Guan visited the Major and Minor Grotto Heaven. Fascinated by the long-lived Evergreen Pine, he inscribed in his own handwriting "Nanshan Evergreen Pine" which was later engraved on the stone in memory of his visit.
