Legend has it that Bai Yuchan, one of the five ancestors of the Southern Sect, once retired to Mt Nanshan after having attained immortality. He had been sitting under this tree to refine his vital breath and over time left a mark on a huge rock. Later generations honored the stone as the Immortal Altar.
