Buddhisrn believes in 'cause'that pred estines an event or a person's fate .It sounds fatalistic but it helps us to accommodate ourselves to circumstances .If we cannot get what we want ,we can like what we can get .It also helps us to treasure friendship and love .Life goes away like a dream and so many things have faded with the passing years ,only the predestined affinity stays with us .
In the seventh ye ar ( 748A .D)during the reign of emper or Xuanzong in Tang dynasty ,the eminent monk Jian Zhen ,accompanied by 17 followers including two Japanese monks and 18 sailors set off from Shaoxing in Zhejiang province to start their fifth voyage to Japan .Not very long after they were on the sea ,their ship was destroyed by typhoon and the crew were blown from the East Sea to the South Sea .After 14days and nights floating on the sea ,Jian Zhen and his company set their feet on leed from Yazhou Bay .During Tang dynasty ,Yazhou was called Linzhen .when the magistrate was informed the arrival of Jian Zhen ,he immediately sent an escort of 400 people and horses waiting outside the city gate in welcome.
Jian Zhen failed his fifth voyage to Japan but he didu't think it a bad thing .He believed that it was the predestined fate that sent him over to this island .He made most of this oppor tunity .When the magistr ate setted him down in the thenDayun Monastery ,he observed the poor condition of the temple and led his followers to raise money around the island for repairing it .As soon as the repair was done ,he started to give lectures on Buddhism until one year and a half later when they left for the capital to prepare the sixth voyage to Japan .In the twelfth voyage to Japan .In the twelfth year of Tianbao period ( 753A .D.),they accomplished their sixth voyage to Japan and eventually set feet on the land of that country ,Leaving a great stotry for posterity to tell about the coultral exchange between the two countries.
Locals in Yazhou (the present Sanya)thought very highly of the predestined affinity with the mond Jian Zhen and his followers as proved by the large stone resembling a person half lying in the shallow water of the sea which has been named as "Jian Zhen Bathing in the Sea".In front of Mt Nanshan ,a large -sized sh\culpture of Jian Zhen and his followers was erected to commemorate those great cultural ambassadors.
Taoism also belives in predestined affinity .During the Northern Song dynasty ,the grand secretary under the head of secretariat ,Ding wei admired the life of immortals .He built a 'Fairy pavilion'and three man -made isles mamed Penglai ,Fangzhang, and Yingzhou in his garden (According to the fairy story,Penglai,Fangzhang and Yingzhou were three islands where immortals inhabit). He flattered himself by thinking that his garden was the donicile of immortals and he has the predestinred affinity with them .A Taoist named Liu Dun observed this ,laughing ,he left a poem on the wall of the pavilion :
Intoxicated, you amble in the fairy pavilion,
Only to find the caves of immortals empty
When you travel across the sea the other year
You'll see the sight same as PenglaiIsle.
Not very long after ,Ding Wei was degraded and was sent to Yazhou as the military staff officer .Liu Dun followed him and met him here .Talking about the poem,Ding Wei suddenly realized that his predestined affinity was not with the three Isles in legend but right here with Yazhuo .With this enlightenment,he let go of the mountain and the sea on Hainan island .
Today ,employees of Dongtian Park are still observing the traditon of treasuring predestined affinity .Guarding and beautifying this stretch of purified land with heart and soul ,they are ready at any time to show you around this 'fairy place',making your visit of the park a treasured memory of your life . |
