Taoism,as a religion was born in Eastern Han dynasty but the theory on nourishing life and faith in immortality had already already been well developed in the pre-Qin era .Master Lao of the late spring amd Autumn Era ,wenzi ,Liezi and zhuangzi of the era of the warring states were all worshiped as immortals by later Taoists .Master Lao was called the sovereign of the Great Dao and its void ,Master Zhuang the perfect Man of Nanhua ,all because their theoretical contribution To the formation of Taoism.

Immortality has been the object people have been hankering after since the ancient time .Emperors such as Yingzheng in Qin dynasty and wu in Han dyuasty had ordered the search of elixir in a wish to keep living eternally ,Although no one succeeded in acquiring elixir ,wise man with a mind to longevity had understood something from the failure of their predecessors .Just as the emperor of wei in the period of Three kingdom ,Caocao put it : "one's life span was not controlled only by Heaven.If one mastered the right way for nourishing life ,devoid of worldy desis as the above mentioned maxim 'My fate lies in my hand instead of Heaven'.

On mentioning Mountain Nanshan,people will think of the popular saying of 'Having a life as everlasting as Mt Nanshan'.There are many mountains in china bearing the same name Nanshan,but residents in sanya consider the mountain here as Nanshan in true sense .It is not due to the fact that this Mt Nanshan is the southernmost mountain in china but also that the area enjoys the highest life expectancy in the country as indicated by the result of the third and fourth national census.

On the façade of the stone House in Dongtian Park ,carved two Chinese characters meaning Mountain Nanshan.It was contributed by Zhao Puchu,the late director of china's Buddhist Culture Society ,the eminent calligrapher in his own handwriting ,They seem to tell us that the mountain here ih the genuine Mt Nanshan.
